SERGIO RODRIGUES

1927 - 2014

SERGIO RODRIGUES IS ARGUABLY THE MOST FAMOUS BRAZILIAN DESIGNER IN THE WORLD, ALONG WITH THE CAMPANA BROTHERS. AFTER GRADUATING IN 1952 FROM THE ARCHITECTURE UNIVERSITY OF RIO DE JANEIRO, SERGIO RODRIGUES MOVED TO CURITIBA, WHERE HE WORKED ON THE CIVIC CENTER PROJECT. WHEN THE LATTER WAS COMPLETED, SERGIO PARTNERED WITH CARLO AND ERNESTO HAUNER TO OPEN MOVEIS ARTESANAIS PARANENSE. IT WAS A FINANCIAL DISASTER (THEY SOLD 6 SOFAS IN 6 MONTHS). IN 1954, THE HAUNERS MOVED TO SAO PAULO AND FOUNDED FORMA, OFFERING SERGIO A POSITION AS THE HEAD OF DESIGN. SOON AFTER HE HAD ARRIVED, A YOUNG AUSTRIAN DESIGNER WHO HAD JOINED THE DESIGN TEAM, MARTIN EISLER, SAID TO SERGIO : "AS A DESIGNER, YOU HAVE NO FUTURE". A FEW MONTHS LATER, SERGIO RESIGNED FROM FORMA AND MOVED BACK TO RIO, STARTING BACK TO ZERO AGAIN. HOPEFULLY, IT WASN'T LONG UNTIL SERGIO GOT IT BACK TOGETHER. WITH THE FINANCIAL HELP OF AN ITALIAN ARISTOCRAT, SERGIO OPENED HIS OWN BUSINESS, OCA (WHICH REFERS TO THE TRADITIONAL AMAZONIAN HUT), ON MAY 10TH, 1955, ON IPANEMA'S RUA JANGADEIROS. IT WOULD BE THE BEGINNING OF A WONDERFUL, HIGHLY-CREATIVE PERIOD FOR SERGIO, THAT LASTED UNTIL THE LATE 1960'S. OCA EXPANDED AT THE SPEED OF LIGHT, AND BECAME THE NUMBER ONE FURNITURE COMPANY IN BRAZIL, MOSTLY THANKS TO THE HUGE SUCCESS OF THE MOLE, WHICH WAS AWARDED THE FIRST PRIZE AT THE CANTU TRIENNALE IN 1961, WITH A JURY COMPOSED OF... ARNE JACOBSEN AND IGNAZIO GARDELLA. IN 1968, AFTER A DISPUTE WITH HIS PARTNERS, SERGIO RODRIGUES LEFT OCA. HE SET UP AN INTERIOR DESIGN STUDIO, AND WORKED THROUGHOUT THE 1970'S AND 1980'S ON NUMEROUS PROJECTS, INCLUDING THE BLOCH OFFICES, HOTELS, AND PRIVATE HOUSING. IN 1973, HIS KILIN CHAIR WAS ANOTHER GREAT SUCCESS, AND THE 1978 TAJA OUTDOOR LINE CAN STILL BE FOUND IN MANY BRAZILIAN GARDENS. IN THE 1990'S HOWEVER, SERGIO RODRIGUES WOULD BE FORGOTTEN, BUT FORTUNATELY HIS EARLY WORKS AND THEIR IMPORTANCE IN THE HISTORY OF BRAZILIAN DESIGN WOULD BE REDISCOVERED AGAIN. THE 2002 DIZ LOUNGE CHAIR WOULD BE ANOTHER MAJOR COMMERCIAL SUCCESS, PRASIED AS A CONTEMPORARY CLASSIC PIECE, AND PUTTING SERGIO BACK ON THE MAP - AND IN ALMOST EVERY SINGLE ISSUE OF AD AND CASA VOGUE. AFTER AN INTENSE CAREER SPANNING SIX DECADES, SERGIO RODRIGUES PEACEFULLY PASSED AWAY AT 87.
