JORGE RODRIGUEZ-AGUILAR

BORN 1960, BARRANQUILLA, COLOMBIA. LIVES AND WORKS IN RIO DE JANEIRO

GROWING UP IN COLOMBIA DURING ITS DARKEST DAYS, JORGE'S FIRST WORKS WERE DEEPLY INFLUENCED BY EVERYDAY VIOLENCE, THAT HE TRANSLATED INTO LARGE-SCALE INSTALLATIONS MOKING THE BANALIZATION OF VIOLENT BEHAVIOURS IN THE COLOMBIAN SOCIETY. AFTER RELOCATING TO BRAZIL , HE DISCOVERED A GREATER FORM OF VIOLENCE THAT'S GLOBAL : DEFORESTATION. IN A PROCESS OF CREATION OUT OF CHAOS, HE STARTED TO CRAFT SCULPTURES FROM RECLAIMED WOOD TRUNKS, FALLEN BRANCHES OR JUNK FURNITURE, thAT RESEMBLE functional artefacts polished by time - lonely bodies evolving FREELY in space. HIS INTEREST IN BRAZILIAN CULTURE LED HIM TO MAKE RESEARCH ABOUT CANDOMBLE, THE RELIGION DEVELOPED FROM ANIMIST BELIEFS INHERITED FROM AFRICAN SLAVES. WITH PRESERVATION OF NATURE AS ONE OF ITS MOST IMPORTANT DOGMA AND A STRONG VISUAL UNIVERSE, RODRIGUEZ-AGUILAR DISCOVERED IN CANDOMBLE A SOMEHOW NATURAL CONNECTION TO HIS WORK AND A VAST SOURCE OF INSPIRATION. ONE OF HIS LAST SERIES, 'SOLUCOES ALTERNATIVAS PARA UM FUTURO INCERTO', INTEGRATES IN LARGE HANGING SCULPTURES OBJECTS TRADITIONALLY USED IN CANDOMBLE RITUALS SUCH AS BUFFALO HORNS AND CABAÇAS, MOUNTED ON DISCARDED INDUSTRIAL ELEMENTS.
